It was made only in 12 through all the pre-World War II years, although Val Browning had developed a scaled-down gauge version and there may have been some very rare gauge Superposeds in Europe before the war. Initially they were available in just one grade, the so-called Grade I with minimal engraving. They were delightful little guns and immediately caught the fancy of upland gunners. Unlike the A-5 20 gauge, which remained the same throughout its life except for a change in grip shape and the change of manufacture to Japan in , the Superposed 20 underwent some changes almost immediately. First, the engraving pattern was increased only two years after its introduction. Then in , the Lightning grade was introduced. The Lightning had been available in 12 gauge before the war, but production was stopped after the war. In , both the 12 and the 20 were available in the Lightning grade.
I had been a loyal 94 follower and had tried most of the calibers and variations. Something struck me wrong about the closing of the plant and I was soon out of the Winchester ownership program. One day I heard about the new. Upon firing both, I found the chambers to be to rough and actually had fired rounds brass seize up in the chambers. Both had to have the chamber polished out!
I did a little research and found others who had the same problem.

Inspired by the work of Hiram Maxim Browning began work on an automatic machine-gun. Unlike Maxim used propelling gas as a motive force. He drilled a hole in the gun barrel to divert some of the gas behind the bullet into a cylinder to drive a piston, which performed the various tasks of extracting the cartridge case, reloading and firing. In the Browning machine-gun was purchased by the US Navy. In Browning produced a new 0. However, the gun was not ordered by the United States Army until Over the next eighteen months 57, of these guns were produced for soldiers fighting on the Western Front.
On reaching the firing range I quit wishing that Charlie and I had changed our shirts that morning, and before anyone had time to say much, we had the gun on the mount, banging away into one of the firing tunnels. I ran the two hundred rounds through so fast nobody could think. When the last empty shell spanged on the floor, with not a hitch in two hundred, Hall and his men were bug-eyed.

But whilst some thought it was getting a little long in the tooth, it seems Browning had other ideas, as the new look XS Prestige more than justifies their faith and investment. Oh Look At That! Being 10mm wide over the entire length quickly tapering down to 9mm over the top chamber, the cross-cut centre groove is still one of my more favoured arrangements. From the moment you assemble the Ultra and bring it to your shoulder it offers a most purposeful feel.

Importation of the Baby Browning into the U. With the loss of the U. I have been unable to examine one of these MAB-made guns, but Col. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who owns one. One was reportedly purchased in , which may give the lie to the entire date sequence reported above, and may indicate that FN was outsourcing production to MAB much earlier than previously reported, but I have no other evidence than this one story. The Bauer was machined from stainless steel.
It featured a few minor differences from the Baby Browning–including a redesigned safety spring and a slightly different takedown procedure–in order not to infringe existing U. Late production Bauers also featured a loaded chamber indicator. The Bauer was available in satin stainless and blued stainless finishes, though I have never seen a blued one. After Bauer went out of business another company produced the gun under the name Frasier for a few years. PSP became the sole authorized manufacturer of the Baby Browning in the world, and PSP was also allowed to manufacture the pistol under its own name for sale in North America.
However, due to various legal and political complications the original order for 40, pistols was never filled.

Liked times The Browning takedown is a great little rifle. I had one and sold it like many of my other guns. I find no fault with the Japanese made models.
On November 22, , the Boston Herald printed a glowing report about Borchardt and his new pistol, noting that Georg Luger exhibited the new gun before a U. S. Navy small arms board at Providence, R. I. on November 21, and “that it had a great future before it.”.
What looks like a modern reproduction of the classic humpback Auto 5 is actually an entirely new shotgun. Will the nostalgic shooters embrace it? Or is this a gun for the new age hunter? In a brilliant move built upon that undying affection for those old arms, Browning resurrected the design with the modern A5. While the outward similarities are clear in appearance, the inner workings share little. Whereas the humpback design of the original was born of necessity — the bolt needed room to move — the new model retains this style as a nod to the past.
Unlike its elder, the new A5 has state-of-the art interchangeable chokes, high grade wood and needs no adjustment from light to heavy loads. Though released in mid , these guns are finally making their way onto gun shop racks. It included a small choke tube box with three Invector DS chokes — full, modified and improved mod — and a nice choke wrench. Browning even includes multiple shims for adjusting both length of pull, cast and drop.
The sleek ventilated rib lends the gun a fast, modern look.

Tuesday, August 3, Metal Treatments: Browning and Bluing Since the early days of gun-making, people were looking for different ways to better protect the iron and steel parts of their weapons. There are actually two forms of “bluing”, one is called “cold bluing” and the other is called “hot bluing”. We will study both processes here.
We will also study the process of “browning”. So what is the purpose of these processes. The purpose is to provide a thin coating on the outside of the iron and steel parts, so that they are protected from rusting and corrosion. The idea is to intentionally rust the outside surface of the part such as the barrel and then stop the rusting processes. The outside layer then protects the inside parts from further rusting and corrosion. Additionally, these processes reduce the glare of what would otherwise be a very shiny part.

It was an open-bolt, gas operated design that used a toggle link locking into the distinctive humpback in the top of the receiver. By Randy Wakeman The Browning A-5, the most important semi-automatic shotgun ever made, is likely also one of the most misunderstood shotguns, despite its year history. There is an amazing amount of misinformation and misunderstanding about what it was, what it is and what it does. Although at its best in the field, the A-5 won its fair share of National Skeet Championships in the form of the Remington Model It was not designed to be quickly completely disassembled.
The ultra-thin screws of the Belgian A-5 served as a deterrent to the would-be home gunsmith.
